The University of Waterloo Fine Arts Department is pleased to welcome Ivan Jurakic as the new Director/Curator of UWAG, the University of Waterloo Art Gallery. Established in 1964, the University of Waterloo Art Gallery programs exhibitions in two connected gallery spaces; develops events on campus to augment the exhibitions program; manages the collection of the University of Waterloo; and works closely with both undergraduate and graduate students in the Fine Arts program. UWAG’s renewed focus will be to produce a challenging and engaging exhibitions program that highlights recent trends in contemporary art featuring regionally and nationally significant Canadian artists.

Over the years, Ivan Jurakic has developed numerous exhibitions focusing on the work of emerging and mid-career Canadian artists. He has curated exhibitions and written about the works of Colleen Wolstenholme, Sara Angelucci, Kelly Mark, Vessna Perunovich, James Carl and Jean-Pierre Gauthier among others, and represented Shary Boyle at the 2009 Sobey Art Award. He takes the post at UWAG with a record of promoting the work of contemporary artists in the region and for collaborating on touring exhibitions with university-affiliated galleries such as the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre in Guelph, Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at the University of Toronto, Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery in Halifax and Galerie L’UQAM in Montréal. His previous positions have included Administrative Director of Hamilton Artists Inc. from 1994-2002, and Curator of Cambridge Galleries from 2004-2010. He received his Honours B.A. from the University of Guelph and his M.F.A. from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Jurakic began his new position in June, and in addition will be teaching a course in conjunction with the Fine Arts Department during the winter semester. The new exhibitions program at UWAG will launch during the start of the first week of classes beginning on September 13, 2010. Please join us in welcoming Ivan to the University of Waterloo!
